Music; the Soundtrack of our lives…

An Insight from Michael MacRitchie

From the first lullaby sung to us as  babies, music provides the “soundtrack” of our lives.  So much so that I think many of us take it for granted — just as we do the soundtrack of a film, which we often hear without listening to it. That is, we enjoy the film without realizing how much the music conditions our reaction.

Music penetrates almost every part of our lives: our rest, our entertainment, our education, and if you are religious- your prayer.

Throughout history, it has celebrated the triumphs and tragedies of life. As Plato said, music “gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination”. Read the rest of this entry »

Ke$ha – Behind the Glitter

An Insight by Lauren Jane

Whether you like Ke$ha or think her song, Tik Tok, is commercialized garbage, there is no denying that she has now got herself a smash hit single.

Tik Tok hooks in the listener from the very beginning. Her playful and bizarre rapping style is so uniquely different from other pop-artists, and through this, she’s found a way to keep her fans wanting more. Sure she’s the definition of a commercialized pop star, but perhaps there’s a little more to her?

So what’s the real story behind this crazy, glitter-covered pop-sensation? With a wild collaboration of aesthetic elements, she effortlessly connects with the modern image of a pop star. Clearly she wants to make a statement and be remembered. She even felt the need to jazz up her name with a dollar sign. Read the rest of this entry »

Lady Gaga and Beyonce Telephone video (a little racy!)

CNN reports that MTV banned Lady Gaga and Beyonce Telephone video; MTV says they didn’t. Monday, CNN reported that MTV pulled a Beyonce and Lady Gaga video because of its sexual and violent content. The music video, Telephone was released Thursday and has had over 13 million views on YouTube. The controversy over the Telephone video has created a ‘net buzz.

According to a CNN report released Monday night many Beyonce  fans are questioning why she would be involved in such a video. Beyonce’s videos have been a little tamer. Even in the Telephone video, Beyonce is still more subdued then her lady counterpart is.

Lady Gagaon the other hand goes out all in the Telephone video and makes out with another woman, makes sexual advances and the video itself is quite violent.

MTV has attempted to contact CNN all day Monday about their report (which can be seen below until it is removed), but they have not received a response. MTV states that they have not banned the Beyonce and Lady Gaga video video.

Chinese Music Scene?

Chinese Music Scene?

This is an outsiders look into the Chinese Music industry told from the perspective of indie rock band ‘handsome furs’.

China Music Radar reports that In September 2009, China based promoter Split Works organized an 8 city Asian tour through China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.  The tour was picked up by CNN, who gave Dan and Lex a pair of Flip Cameras to record their exploits. The article can be found here www.Chinamusicradar.com

It’s an interesting move on the part of the white collar, straight-laced news network, one that is well discussed in the comments section of the video series.  CNN have also lined up with the Vice TV offshoot, VBS.tv, in a move to expand their audience.  You can read more about the tie up HERE.

It’s a great set of excerpts, and a good insight into life on the road in Asia’s emerging circuit. Unfortunately, we cannot embed the video.  To watch, you will have to go HERE. Read the rest of this entry »

An Army of Black Shirts…

A review by Andrew Howie

Ridin’ down the highway, goin’ to a show. AC/DC are currently touring. Spreading the good word of their new album “Black Ice’, they have stops through Europe, the United States and Australia just to name a mere few.

Widely thought of as Rock and Roll pioneers, these guys have sold over 200 million albums. Their history can be broken in to the pre-Scott era and post. Bon Scott died after a night of heavy drinking in 1980. A loss that almost caused this legendary group to disband. After a bit of back and forth, they came to settle on their new, and current lead singer Brian Johnson. During all this time, Malcolm and Angus Young, the bands founders have remained the backbone of the group. Read the rest of this entry »

There is no sweeter headline than ‘Reunion Tour’ for any diehard fan.

An insight by Andrew Howie

Over the last decade there have been some that have been amazing, and sadly there have been some that have stunk out the stadium.

Looking back to one of the more famous reunion tours, the Blues Brothers put the band back together for a cause. They needed to raise money for the orphanage that had taken them in as juveniles. You all know the story. They toured across the country filling suitcases with money.

Let’s look at the motivations behind a recent and very high profile tour.

Someone seemingly at the end of her career is Whitney Houston. Whitney comes from what can only be called Soul’s Blue Blood. Her Godmother is Aretha Franklin. Her mother and cousins were lounge singers. She has a list of accolades longer than Robert Downey Jnr’s rap sheet, having sold more than 170 million albums. She was married to Bobby Brown and even starred in several movies including ‘The Bodyguard’. Come the late 90’s things seem to head a little bit south for Whitney. There were canceled interviews, performances and dramatic physical changes that incubated rumors of drug abuse. Read the rest of this entry »

Grammy Awards Show500x_grammyalg_show_swift3

In a mild upset, Beyonce Knowles, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift only won most of the awards at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards last night.

But they did have to share the stage with a public appearance by Prince and Paris Jackson, who accepted a lifetime achievement award for their late father Michael.

Prince thanked God, his family, his father and Michael’s fans.

Thanks largely to the three glamorous ladies, hooks and looks dominated the 52nd annual awards almost as completely as they dominated last year’s pop radio.

Beyonce won song of the year as the co writer of her smash “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It), and she won four statuettes in the pre-telecast part of the show. Swift won for best country album, best country vocal and best country song. Lady Gaga won best dance album for “The Fame” and best dance recording for “Poker Face,” which she also performed to kick off the show.

Kings of Leon crashed ladies’ night to win three awards, including record of the year for “Use Somebody.” That song also won them best rock song and best hard rock group performance.

The Zac Brown Band won best artist and provided a change of pace in the live performance by opening its set with “America.”

The Black-Eyed Peas also won three awards, for short-form video, pop performance by a group and pop vocal album.

But the focus of the show was performance, as last night’s show reflected the shift in many televised awards shows away from presentation to promotion.

Gaga set the tone, kicking off the show with a rendition of her omnipresent “Poker Face” that featured a cast of thousands.
