The 68th annual Golden Globes veered into Cluedo territory last night as the event’s host went missing for nearly an hour. Ricky Gervais‘s absence from the stage, following an opening monologue that drew more gasps than laughs, led excited observers to speculate that the British comic may have been collared backstage and fired … or worse.
Gervais opened the live telecast by poking exuberant fun at the likes of Tim Allen, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. He claimed to have had to help Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, off the toilet and “put his teeth back in”. He introduced Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s dad” and explained that Johnny Depp’s critically panned caper movie The Tourist had only been nominated because the voters of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association “accepted bribes”. Neither Willis nor Depp appeared especially amused. Read the rest of this entry »

CHINA’S UGLY BETTY “UGLY WUDI”
China — A raft of new Chinese television advertising restrictions have made sponsorship and product placement a strong alternative route to reaching a ballooning consumer market, according to an independent analysts’ report released recently.
The series of new TV ad rules put in place in the first quarter of 2010 by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television “play directly into the hands of sponsors and product placers,” the report from Beijing-based media consultants China Media Monitor-Intelligence said.
“There has never been a better time to start closing the gap between reaching consumers and making quality programming,” Kristian Kender, CMM-I’s research director, told MGI Entertainment. Read the rest of this entry »

Over the years, small screen hits have made their way to the big screen. Many have been successful too and spawned sequels. A great example of this is Mission Impossible. Certainly some of the better work we have seen from Tom Cruise in recent memory.
We have two famous franchises hitting the big screen and making waves as we speak. I am talking about Sex and they City 2 and The A Team. Whilst I have absolutely no interest in the former, it would be remiss of me not to discuss the culture phenomenon that it is. And the impact it has had on women around the world.
Many women have grown up emulating these women and they way they live their lives. Powerful, sexy, successful and most importantly comfortable in their own skin, these four women have sprouted trends that have made people, including themselves, rich and famous many times over. In the most recent second installment, the stars, now firmly in their 40’s and 50’s, move with ever more style and grace. They show that age is no barrier and often, a little bit of experience can help you manage some tough situations with poise. For example, people who chose to question your ability to wear an outfit, based on a pre-conceived social expectation. Read the rest of this entry »

Turning our readers attention to Australia and a recent scandal with one of the major league clubs.
When the police look to take down a drug ring, they don’t look to pin it on the mid-weight dealer. They look to go all the way to the top. Because, if you take down the top, then you ultimately bring down the lot.
So when the news broke this week that the Melbourne Storm had been breaching the salary cap, I began to read with interest as I could see a deeper motive. Surely they are not the only team guilty of this practice.
Not only was the breach long standing, it was systematic in its approach. It was so simple. Claim twice for an expense. And use that windfall to fund other activity. No different to claiming travel expenses from your employer and then claiming then back on tax.
I was asked at work by a British colleague to explain what had happened. And as usual I defaulted to an analogy to get my point across. And this was what I said: Read the rest of this entry »

Denim brand G-Star has released its new ad campaign starring actress Liv Tyler.
The campaign was shot by Dutch photographer and director Anton Corbijn for the third time, an artist mainly known for his work for bands including Depeche Mode and Nirvana.
G-Star is also Dutch and already successful on European markets but wants to up its ante now, especially in the US, which is why the brand has been showing its collections at New York Fashion Week for the past few seasons.
The 32-year-old Stealing Beauty actress will appear in print advertisements for G-Star until the Fall of this year. The label plans to expand to 50 free-standing stores in the U.S.
“Liv is a great fit for the brand because she exudes the perfect level of sensuality, a characteristic very important to G-Star,” a label rep said according to People. “She’s a strong, beautiful and independent woman with an impeccable feeling for style.”
Liv Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith lead singer Steven, is a popular spokesmodel for fashion and beauty brands, having previously starred in ads for Gap and Givenchy’s Very Irresistible fragrance ads.

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards was a night of firsts in the famed award show’s history: the first time since 1943 that ten feature films were nominated for Best Picture, the first time a woman won Best director and the first time that product placement was recognized as simply a seamlessly integrated plot characteristic in many of the night’s biggest film honourees.
Sandra Bullock received an Oscar for her performance in The Blind Side. In the movie she portrayed Anne Tuohy, whose automobile of choice was a BMW. In a film that emphasizes family values, good deeds and warm hearts, the BMW brand is associated not only with affluence, but an uplifting story of kindness. Another brand that made its way into the spotlight in The Blind Side is Taco Bell. Sean Tuohy, the adopted father of Michael Oher, is a successful Taco Bell franchise owner and throughout the film the Touhy family eats Taco Bell at family meals. The family donates Taco Bell leftovers to local charities-presenting Taco Bell as a charitable family brand. Other brands integrated into The Blind Side’s family driven plot line are Canon and Borders. In the film, Canon video cameras are used to document Michael Oher’s progress as a football player. In a touching scene, the children section at Borders helps Michael relive the childhood he never had. Read the rest of this entry »

Over the last decade there have been some that have been amazing, and sadly there have been some that have stunk out the stadium.
Looking back to one of the more famous reunion tours, the Blues Brothers put the band back together for a cause. They needed to raise money for the orphanage that had taken them in as juveniles. You all know the story. They toured across the country filling suitcases with money.
Let’s look at the motivations behind a recent and very high profile tour.
Someone seemingly at the end of her career is Whitney Houston. Whitney comes from what can only be called Soul’s Blue Blood. Her Godmother is Aretha Franklin. Her mother and cousins were lounge singers. She has a list of accolades longer than Robert Downey Jnr’s rap sheet, having sold more than 170 million albums. She was married to Bobby Brown and even starred in several movies including ‘The Bodyguard’. Come the late 90’s things seem to head a little bit south for Whitney. There were canceled interviews, performances and dramatic physical changes that incubated rumors of drug abuse. Read the rest of this entry »
